David Hasert stands as a pivotal figure in Cologne's electronic music scene, well known for his multifaceted contributions as a DJ, producer, label head, and live performer. His musical journey began with a wide range of influences and an early passion for band culture—most notably through MALK, a post-punk/electro ensemble that rose during the golden era of Myspace. At a time when the platform acted as both launchpad and sonic laboratory, MALK carved out a presence that led to releases on respected imprints like Motor Music. This early momentum would form the foundation for Hasert’s future as a trailblazer in Cologne’s evolving club culture.

In 2012, Hasert transitioned fully into electronic music and founded LIKE Records, a label defined by its genre-fluid ethos and its motto, “Take Off Your Brain.” LIKE was never just a label—it quickly became the nucleus for a series of genre-defying parties that reflected the same experimental spirit, uniting both emerging and established artists. These events cultivated a vibrant community and mirrored the label’s commitment to musical freedom and exploration.

At the same time, Hasert helped shape Reineke Fuchs into one of Cologne’s most respected venues. Under his direction, it transformed into a cultural institution, drawing international talent while serving as a sanctuary for the local underground. His leadership at both LIKE Records and Reineke Fuchs has left an indelible mark on Cologne’s nightlife, making him a central architect of the city’s contemporary sound.

Hasert’s production catalog spans respected labels such as Stil vor Talent, Wolf + Lamb, Beats In Space, DFA, Katermukke, Underyourskin, and Kompakt. Standout tracks like “The Answer” on Dantze, “Break Silent” (Get Physical), and “Ah Oh Uh” (Ritter Butzke) have been widely received, earning him consistent praise and recognition across global dance floors and digital platforms alike.

In 2013, Hasert released his critically acclaimed album “Smalltown Boy” on Carioca Music, showcasing his range beyond the dance floor. His live sets and DJ performances have taken him around the world, including a standout slot at Burning Man during his 2015 U.S. tour—cementing his reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking performer.

Known for his collaborative instinct, Hasert has worked with an array of respected artists, including Ada, with whom he formed the experimental duo DAMH. This spirit of collaboration is at the core of his artistry—one rooted not just in sound, but in community. Through his work, David Hasert continues to shape the sonic identity of Cologne and inspire a new generation of producers and selectors to push boundaries with heart.

Frequencies with David Hasert

C: With your deep roots in Cologne’s electronic music scene, you're uniquely positioned to reflect on how it's evolving. What changes or developments have you seen recently, and how would you describe what sets Cologne apart from other cities?

D: Cologne’s scene stays laid-back but forward-thinking—more intimate, genre-blending events rather than just big club nights. Unlike Berlin’s chaos or Frankfurt’s precision, Cologne keeps it warm, groovy, and effortlessly cool.

C:  As an artist with an extensive catalog on renowned labels, I’d like to know how your process works when choosing where to release your music, and whether this affects your creative process even before producing a track.

D: It’s a mix of instinct and strategy. I don’t create tracks just to fit a label, but I do consider where a track might feel at home. Some labels inspire a certain vibe, but the music always comes first—the right label finds it naturally.

C: Could you tell us about your experience working in a more collaborative setting? How has it been working with artists like Ada, and how does collaborating and making joint decisions impact your creative process?

D: Collaboration shakes things up in the best way. Working with artists like Ada brings new perspectives and unexpected ideas. It’s less about control, more about flow—bouncing ideas, challenging each other, and ending up somewhere neither of us would’ve gone alone.

C:  Our idea at Peachz is to create a more fair, healthy, and friendly environment within the electronic scene. With your vast experience in the industry, what actions would you like to see on a platform like ours?

D: Transparency and real support for artists. Fair payouts, fewer middlemen, and a focus on community over clout. A platform that values music over metrics would be a game-changer.

C: Could you tell me a bit more about your future projects? Will we be able to hear new music or any exciting updates in the coming months?

D: Absolutely! New music, exciting collaborations, and live shows are coming. Sadly, I can’t go into detail just yet, but there’s plenty to look forward to—stay tuned!
