With the goal of taking affordable gear to a whole new level, Behringer’s founder has announced a plan to create a $9.90 synthesizer aimed at making music production a truly democratic exercise.
Owning a Behringer synth in your early years as a music producer has become something of a rite of passage. Let’s be honest — not necessarily because of the machines’ premium quality, but because of their unbeatable prices. While they might not compete with brands like Roland in terms of legacy or finesse, Behringer offers one of the best price-to-performance ratios on the market.
Uli Behringer, the brand’s founder, is well aware of this. In a recent interview with Sweetwater, he revealed his plans to take things even further: the company is currently developing a synthesizer that would cost just $9.90.
According to the CEO, the motivation behind this ultra-low price point is to improve accessibility for young people — especially in lower-income countries. “We already have synthesizers starting at $49. My goal is to make them for $9.90 so they’re accessible everywhere. We’re even considering giving them away, as we’ve done before,” said Behringer.
It’s worth noting that the company has already donated over 1,500 synthesizers to underserved regions such as Nepal and Latin America — areas where kids often have little to no access to music technology.
For Uli, Behringer’s mission goes far beyond commercial success:
“It was an amazing experience to see the videos and pictures come back of smiling kids. That’s something I want to do for the rest of my life”
At Peachz, we celebrate efforts like these that push for the democratization of music-making. While there are still no further details on the release of this new ultra-affordable synth, stay tuned — we’ll keep you posted as soon as more information drops.
